In a rare and heartfelt interview, Rafael Nadal’s parents, Ana María Parera and Sebastián Nadal, opened up about the immense pride they feel for their son—not only for his legendary tennis career but also for the man he has become off the court.

Speaking from their home in Mallorca, the couple reminisced about Rafael’s journey, from a shy boy with a racket bigger than himself to one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen.

“We didn’t expect this,” said Ana María with a soft smile. “We knew he had talent, of course. From a young age, he was different. Focused, passionate, and extremely disciplined. But to win 22 Grand Slam titles? To inspire millions? No, that goes beyond our dreams.”

Sebastián, who has always played a more reserved public role, shared how difficult and emotional the journey has been. “There were many sacrifices,” he admitted. “Not just from Rafael, but from the whole family. Travelling, training, being away from home. We always supported him, but we also worried—about injuries, pressure, and his happiness.”

When asked what they are most proud of, neither of them mentioned trophies or titles.

“The way he treats people,” Ana María replied without hesitation. “He is respectful, humble, and kind. That’s more important than any win at Roland Garros.”

Sebastián nodded in agreement. “We see how he behaves with fans, with the press, with opponents. He shows character, even in defeat. That’s what makes us proud.”

The couple also touched on how their relationship with Rafael changed over the years. “Now, he’s not just our son,” said Sebastián, “he’s also our friend. We trust him, and he trusts us. It’s a very special bond.”

As Rafael Nadal continues to navigate the twilight of his tennis career, his parents remain by his side—cheering, advising, and, most of all, loving him for who he is beyond the spotlight.

“Win or lose,” Ana María concluded, “he will always be our champion.”
