In a recent interview, George Russell opened up about his relationship with former Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, offering rare insight into their dynamic both on and off the track. Russell acknowledged the immense respect he holds for Hamilton, calling him “one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history.” Despite the natural competitiveness between teammates, Russell said their relationship was built on mutual professionalism and shared goals for the team.
“There were definitely moments of tension,” Russell admitted, “but that’s only natural when two drivers are pushing each other to the limit.” He emphasized that while they had different personalities and approaches, their communication remained respectful and constructive. “Lewis is incredibly experienced and calm, and I learned a lot from being alongside him,” Russell said.
Russell also revealed that the pressure of racing with a seven-time world champion made him grow faster as a driver. “It pushed me to raise my game,” he shared. Although their time as teammates has ended, Russell said he looks back with gratitude. “We may have gone our separate ways, but I’ll always value the lessons I took from our time together. It was a privilege.”
Their partnership may be over, but the mutual respect clearly remains.
