Lewis Hamilton and Angela Cullen, his long-time physiotherapist and performance coach, amicably parted ways in early 2023 after a seven-year collaboration that significantly contributed to Hamilton’s success in Formula 1. Cullen, a New Zealand-born former field hockey player, joined Hamilton’s team in 2016 through the Hintsa Performance company. Their partnership coincided with one of the most successful periods in Hamilton’s career, during which he secured four consecutive world championships from 2017 to 2020 .

The split was publicly announced via social media ahead of the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Hamilton expressed deep gratitude for Cullen’s support, stating, “For the last seven years, [Angela] has been by my side, pushing me to be the best version of myself. I am a stronger athlete and a better person because of her.” He added, “Thank you for everything Ang, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you” .

While neither party provided a specific reason for the separation, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff suggested that it was Hamilton’s decision, noting that “change comes when things don’t work out anymore” and emphasizing the importance of honesty and evolution within a team .

Following their split, Cullen embarked on a new chapter in her career, moving to the United States and working in the IndyCar series, where she collaborated with fellow New Zealander Marcus Armstrong .

In a surprising development, Cullen was spotted at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit in January 2025, coinciding with Hamilton’s first visit to the Maranello factory as he began his tenure with Scuderia Ferrari. This sighting fueled speculation about a potential reunion between the two, especially as Hamilton seeks to rejuvenate his career at age 40 with the iconic Italian team .

Hamilton has consistently spoken highly of Cullen, describing her as “the single hardest-working woman that I get to be around” and highlighting her unwavering positivity and focus . Their professional relationship may have ended, but their personal bond remains strong, with Hamilton stating that they continue to stay in touch and support each other’s endeavors .

As Hamilton embarks on this new chapter with Ferrari, the potential reunion with Cullen could provide a familiar and supportive presence, potentially aiding him in his quest for an eighth world championship.
