Pope Leo XIV is a name that has not yet been used by any pope in the history of the Catholic Church. However, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., currently a key figure in the Vatican, is often seen as a highly respected Church leader and potential papal candidate due to his extensive service, leadership, and theological expertise.
Born in 1955, Cardinal Prevost was ordained a priest in 1982 and has since served in pastoral, academic, and administrative roles, particularly in Peru and Rome. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, he completed advanced studies in canon law at the Angelicum in Rome. From missionary work in Chulucanas to two terms as Prior General of the Augustinian Order, his career reflects deep commitment to global Church leadership.
He became Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015 and was later appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023, a vital position in overseeing episcopal appointments worldwide. He was created cardinal on 30 September 2023 by Pope Francis. He also serves as President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and holds memberships in several major Vatican dicasteries. His experience, multilingual skills, and global pastoral vision make him a prominent figure in contemporary Catholicism.
