In November 2022, Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton was granted honorary Brazilian citizenship in recognition of his strong ties to the country and its people. The British driver, a seven-time world champion, has long expressed admiration for Brazil, especially for the late Ayrton Senna, one of his racing idols.

Hamilton’s emotional connection to Brazil became even more evident during the 2021 São Paulo Grand Prix, where he delivered a stunning performance to win the race. Afterward, he celebrated by carrying the Brazilian flag around the track, a moment that deeply moved Brazilian fans and politicians alike.

Brazilian congressman André Figueiredo proposed the honorary citizenship, stating that Hamilton’s affection for Brazil and his promotion of equality and diversity made him a worthy recipient. On November 7, 2022, the Chamber of Deputies approved the motion, officially recognizing Hamilton as an honorary Brazilian citizen.

Hamilton expressed his gratitude, calling it “one of the greatest honors” of his life. He stated that Brazil had always felt like a second home and promised to continue supporting the country and its people.

His honorary citizenship highlights not only his racing accomplishments but also his role as a global ambassador for inclusion and human rights.
