Tadej Pogačar is gearing up for the Tour of Flanders this Sunday, aiming for his second victory in the prestigious Belgian Monument. However, the cycling world remains abuzz with speculation about whether he will one day take on the challenge of Paris-Roubaix.
At a press conference organized by UAE Team Emirates – XRG, the reigning World Champion addressed the various hot topics surrounding his campaign in the Spring Classics. Despite being primarily known for his dominance in Grand Tours, Pogačar has already proven his ability to excel in one-day races. His emphatic victory in last year’s Tour of Flanders showcased his versatility, and his participation in the race this year has fueled discussions about his long-term ambitions in the cobbled classics.
When asked about Paris-Roubaix, Pogačar remained cautious. “It’s one of the hardest races in the world, and I have great respect for it,” he said. “Of course, I would love to race it one day, but it has to be at the right moment in my career. It’s a completely different challenge compared to Flanders.” Pogačar’s hesitation is understandable, given that Roubaix’s brutal pavé sectors and high-speed racing favor heavier, more power-based riders rather than climbers like himself. However, many believe that if anyone can defy expectations, it is Pogačar.
For now, his focus remains on the Tour of Flanders. He acknowledged the challenges posed by a stacked field, which includes Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, and several other Classics specialists. “Winning here once was already a dream,” Pogačar admitted. “Doing it again would be even harder, but we will give everything.” He also highlighted the importance of teamwork, praising UAE Team Emirates’ efforts to build a stronger Classics squad.
The conversation also turned to his busy 2024 schedule, including his highly anticipated Giro d’Italia debut. Balancing Grand Tours and one-day races is no easy task, but Pogačar thrives on challenges. “I enjoy racing different types of events. It keeps me motivated and excited,” he explained.
While Paris-Roubaix remains an open question, Pogačar’s presence in the Classics continues to shake up the traditional hierarchy. Whether or not he eventually tackles the “Hell of the North,” his ambitions and talent ensure that cycling fans will have plenty to talk about in the years to come.
