Delhi Capitals (DC) fans are in for an exciting season as Rishabh Pant is set to lead the team in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The news comes as a relief after Pant’s unfortunate car accident last December raised concerns about his return to professional cricket. Initial reports suggested that he might play as an ‘Impact Player’ due to his ongoing recovery, but the latest confirmation from DC management indicates that he will take on the role of captain.
The 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, with expectations of a full recovery by the end of February. However, his active participation, especially as a wicketkeeper, awaits approval from NCA managers to ensure his fitness for every IPL match.
Pant’s absence in the 2023 IPL season was palpable, with David Warner leading the team to a ninth-place finish in the standings, winning only five out of 14 matches. With Pant back at the helm, DC aims to turn the tide and make a strong comeback in the upcoming tournament.
Delhi Capitals’ squad currently has Abishek Porel as the only other wicketkeeper besides Pant. The release of Phil Salt has led to speculations about DC considering additional options in the upcoming auction scheduled for December 19 in Dubai. However, as of now, securing another wicketkeeper is not their top priority, though it remains a consideration for the team’s overall safety and flexibility in the squad. Fans eagerly await Pant’s return and hope for a successful campaign under his captaincy in the upcoming IPL season.
