Red Sox Hero David Ortiz, Lovingly Dubbed “Pig Papi”, to Convert His Home into Shelter for the Needy with $7.5M Pledge

Boston, MA – In a move that’s melting hearts across the baseball world and beyond, beloved Red Sox legend David Ortiz – affectionately known in some circles as “Pig Papi” – has pledged a staggering $7.5 million to convert his private residence into a sanctuary for those who need it most.

Ortiz, whose larger-than-life personality once dominated Fenway Park, is now using that same energy to bring hope to the less privileged. The MLB Hall of Famer announced this heartfelt project earlier this week, stating his lifelong desire to give back in ways that “truly change lives, not just moments.”

“Home should be a place of safety, not just walls and a roof,” Ortiz said during a press briefing. “If I can give that to even a few people, I’ve done something meaningful.”

Known on the field for his power hitting and off the field for his compassion, Ortiz has long supported charitable efforts, including his David Ortiz Children’s Fund. But this latest act of generosity marks a new chapter – one that turns personal space into public service.

Locals have already begun referring to the upcoming centre as “Casa Papi,” and it’s expected to offer temporary housing, hot meals, counselling services, and job assistance for homeless individuals and struggling families in the Boston area.

Construction is set to begin later this year, with plans for the shelter to open its doors by late 2026.

Boston Mayor Kim Janey praised Ortiz’s initiative, calling it “a true example of leadership, kindness, and the power of sports to inspire positive change.”

While some fans still chuckle at the nickname “Pig Papi” – a cheeky spin-off of his famous moniker “Big Papi” – it now carries an added layer of affection, representing someone unafraid to get his hands dirty in the name of humanity.

As Ortiz put it with a smile, “I hit home runs for Boston. Now it’s time to build a home for Boston.”
