In a historic and emotional ceremony held at the Royal Palace of Madrid, King Felipe VI has officially bestowed upon tennis legend Rafael Nadal the noble title “Marquis of Llevant de Mallorca”—a symbolic yet deeply meaningful tribute to one of Spain’s most iconic sons.

A Royal Honour for a National Treasure

Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion known not only for his relentless grit on the court but also for his humility, received the prestigious distinction in front of an audience composed of royal family members, national dignitaries, fellow athletes, and his family.

In his royal address, King Felipe VI praised Nadal’s unwavering dedication to excellence, his representation of Spanish values on the global stage, and his philanthropic work through the Rafa Nadal Foundation. “Rafael Nadal is more than an athlete. He is an example of honour, perseverance, and humility. With this title, we recognize not just his achievements, but the heart and soul of Mallorca that he so proudly carries wherever he goes.”

Llevant de Mallorca – A Fitting Tribute

The title “Marquis of Llevant de Mallorca” is a tribute to Nadal’s roots in the eastern region (Llevant) of the Balearic island of Mallorca, where he was born and still resides. It is the first time in modern Spanish history that a noble title has been granted to a sportsperson while still active in public life.

Nadal appeared visibly moved during his acceptance speech. “To receive this title from His Majesty is a great honour,” he said. “I have always carried my land in my heart, and today, Mallorca carries me in name. This is not only for me but for my people, my family, and all those who believed in me when I was just a boy with a racket and a dream.”

More Than a Title

While the title carries no legal powers, it allows Nadal to be addressed formally as Don Rafael Nadal, Marqués de Llevant de Mallorca. The distinction is expected to be symbolic, underscoring the legacy Nadal has built—not only in sport, but in Spanish culture and society.

Social media lit up with admiration. Thousands shared clips from the ceremony, and hashtags like #MarquésNadal and #LlevantLegend began trending across Spain and Europe.

A Legend Cemented in Spanish History

At 39, Nadal has hinted at retirement soon, but with this honour, his legacy is now carved into the fabric of Spanish nobility. As one tweet aptly put it: “From king of clay to Marquis of Mallorca—Viva Rafa!”
