Lewis Hamilton’s tenure with Ferrari took a dramatic turn during the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, as the seven-time world champion openly criticized his team’s strategy over the radio, leading to a tense post-race atmosphere.

The controversy arose when Hamilton, on fresher medium tyres, was instructed to remain behind teammate Charles Leclerc for several laps. Frustrated by the delay, Hamilton sarcastically quipped over the radio, “have a tea-break while you’re at it,” highlighting his dissatisfaction with Ferrari’s decision-making. Eventually allowed to pass Leclerc, Hamilton couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity and was later asked to relinquish the position as his tyre performance declined. This strategic misstep contributed to Hamilton finishing eighth, just behind Leclerc in seventh.

Post-race, Hamilton stood by his remarks, stating, “I don’t want to apologise for my passion,” emphasizing the emotional intensity inherent in racing. He acknowledged the heat of the moment but maintained that his comments stemmed from a desire to win. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur addressed the incident privately with Hamilton, aiming to ease tensions. Both parties later expressed a mutual commitment to team improvement, recognizing the need for clearer communication and strategy execution.

Ferrari’s internal discord was further highlighted by a late-race collision between Hamilton and former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, though no penalties were issued. The team’s struggles are evident, currently ranking fourth in the constructors’ standings, trailing behind McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull.

As the F1 season progresses, Hamilton and Ferrari face mounting pressure to synchronize their strategies and capitalize on their combined experience. The upcoming race at Imola on May 18 presents an opportunity for redemption and a chance to demonstrate cohesive teamwork.
