Max Verstappen Climbs to Third in All-Time F1 Laps Led – Still 2,000 Behind Hamilton

Max Verstappen continues to etch his name into Formula 1 history books, now climbing to third on the all-time list for most laps led in F1 history. The reigning world champion reached this milestone during the recent Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, where he led a dominant portion of the race. With this achievement, Verstappen surpasses legends like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, further solidifying his status as one of the sport’s elite.

However, there’s still a significant mountain to climb: Verstappen remains around 2,000 laps behind Lewis Hamilton, who currently holds second place on the list behind only Michael Schumacher. Hamilton, with over 5,400 laps led in his illustrious career, set the benchmark during his decade of dominance with Mercedes — a run that included multiple seasons of near-total control over the grid.

Verstappen’s current pace and Red Bull’s performance suggest he could continue closing that gap rapidly. Since 2021, the Dutchman has transformed into a lap-leading machine, often controlling races from the front with relentless consistency. But catching Hamilton will require not just speed and talent — which Verstappen certainly has — but longevity, team reliability, and continued competitiveness over the next several seasons.

Still, the symbolism isn’t lost on fans or the paddock. Verstappen is now statistically among the greats, and every race he leads is another step toward redefining the modern era of Formula 1. While he may need over 2,000 more laps to match Hamilton’s total, few would bet against him doing just that — especially if Red Bull remains the powerhouse it’s become.

For now, Verstappen fans have one more reason to celebrate. And for Hamilton, the challenge from a new generation is closer than ever — and far from over.
