Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team Principal Toto Wolff has provided insights into the team’s driver lineup plans for the 2026 season. Following Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari in 2025, Mercedes has promoted their young protégé, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, to partner with George Russell for the 2025 season. Wolff emphasized the team’s commitment to supporting both drivers, stating, “The two drivers in our car next year have our full support. I want to make it work with George [Russell] and Kimi [Antonelli].”

Looking ahead to 2026, Wolff acknowledged the potential for changes, particularly with the introduction of new engine regulations. He has expressed interest in securing Max Verstappen, the current Red Bull Racing driver, whose contract extends until 2028. Wolff remarked, “The door is never completely closed,” highlighting ongoing communication with Verstappen’s management and the possibility of future collaboration.

Despite these considerations, Wolff remains focused on the immediate future, aiming to position Mercedes competitively before the 2026 regulatory changes. He dismissed the notion of waiting until 2026 to challenge for titles, stating, “I don’t want to give up on the recovery and say, ‘well, let’s wait for 2026, new car, new engine.’ There are two more important years to go.”

As Mercedes navigates this transitional period, the team’s strategy involves nurturing emerging talent like Antonelli while remaining open to opportunities that could enhance their competitiveness in the evolving Formula One landscape.
