Lando Norris faced a second FIA investigation following the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix due to a breach of starting procedures during an aborted start. The incident occurred when Lance Stroll’s crash on the formation lap led to an aborted start. Despite the ‘ABORTED START’ signal, Norris, starting from pole position, initiated another formation lap without authorization, prompting several drivers behind him to follow suit .

The FIA investigated Norris, George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson for this infringement. Norris and Russell, being on the front row, were deemed to have set the precedent for the others. Both received a €5,000 fine and a reprimand, while Tsunoda and Lawson were not penalized, as they were considered to have followed the leaders’ actions .

This incident added to Norris’s challenges during the race, where he finished sixth after starting from pole. The race was notable for Max Verstappen’s victory from 17th on the grid, showcasing a remarkable comeback .

The FIA’s decision emphasized the importance of adhering to starting procedures and clarified that such breaches, even under unusual circumstances, would not be tolerated. The reprimand serves as a warning, as accumulating five reprimands in a season results in a 10-place grid penalty .

This investigation highlighted the complexities and strict regulations governing Formula 1 races, underscoring the need for drivers to remain vigilant and compliant with all procedural directives.
