The FIA has confirmed that both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton had lap times deleted during qualifying sessions due to track limits violations, reigniting debate over the consistency and enforcement of these regulations.

Verstappen has been particularly vocal, criticizing the FIA’s strict approach. He described the situation as making drivers look like “amateurs” and labeled the enforcement as “f****** ridiculous,” highlighting the challenges drivers face in judging track limits at high speeds .

Hamilton has also expressed frustration, particularly over recent rule changes aimed at creating more “balanced” races. He argued that such regulations hinder innovation and detract from the sport’s essence, stating, “Innovation is what drives F1 forward, and now we’re being shackled by unnecessary limitations” .

The FIA’s enforcement relies on a Remote Operation Centre in Geneva, which monitors track limits using various camera angles, similar to VAR in football . This system has led to numerous lap time deletions across various Grand Prix events, affecting multiple drivers and sparking widespread criticism.

As the season progresses, the FIA faces increasing pressure to review and potentially revise its approach to track limits enforcement to maintain the sport’s integrity and competitiveness.
