American Airlines to cut 5 nonstop routes from Austin starting in October

By | August 6, 2024

If you fly from Austin and prefer American Airlines to get to your destination, your choices may have just become more limited.

That’s because the airline is cutting five nonstop routes that service the city’s airport, according to reporting by The Points Guy. The changes were first seen in Cirium schedules and later confirmed to The Points Guy by a carrier spokesperson.

The five impacted routes from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport include year-round service to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and Orlando International Airport, as well as seasonal service to Palm Springs International Airport and Reno–Tahoe International Airport.

Flights on those routes have been canceled starting in October, and affected travelers will be offered either rerouting through an American hub or a full refund.

American has been drastically reducing nonstop service to Austin over the past nine months. In November 2023, the carrier cut 21 Austin routes. And then more recently, the carrier cut nonstop service to Indianapolis. Those most recent changes go into effect on Aug. 6, according to KXAN-TV.

With all of the recent route cuts, American is left with nonstop service from Austin to:

Aspen

Boston

Cancun

Charlotte

Chicago

Dallas/Fort Worth

Los Angeles

Los Cabos

Miami

Nashville

New York-JFK

Orange County

Philadelphia

Phoenix

Raleigh/Durham

Going forward, American Airlines travelers will have to connect through nearby hubs to get to other top destinations from the city. The carrier said it’s increasing capacity on its hub routes, according to The Points Guy.

Alternatively, flyers still looking for nonstop options might have better luck with competitors Delta Air Lines or Southwest Airlines. Both offer nonstop service from Austin to Las Vegas and Orlando.
