Delta Air Lines will be suspending flights between New York JFK Airport (JFK) and Bogotá (BOG) this winter season as it adjusts its schedule “to align with consumer demand,” the airline says in a statement to Simple Flying. At present, the US carrier flies to the Colombian capital daily with a Boeing 757-200 aircraft.
It is worth noting, though, that the airline does fly from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Bogotá, meaning the destination is not being cut completely from the carrier’s network.
Commercial considerations
The airline has cited consumer demand as the cause of the suspension. According to Aeroroutes, reservations have been closed for flights on and after October 27, 2024.
In an email response to Simple Flying, a Delta Air Lines spokesperson said:
“Delta will discontinue its nonstop service between New York (JFK) and Bogota (BOG), as we adjust our schedule to align with consumer demand. The final flight between New York and Bogota is scheduled for October 26, 2024.
Delta will continue to serve Bogota with twice daily flights from Atlanta. Additionally, customers can access Bogota through our joint venture partner LATAM, which offers twice daily service from Miami and daily service from Orlando.”
Some reports suggest that the cut is limited to the winter season schedule, although Delta’s statement does not reflect that of a temporary route suspension. Cirium data consulted by Simple Flying in February and March also does not show any Delta flight listed. The carrier’s website does list select flights as bookable, but these are likely to be removed as it updates its reservation system.
Current operation: New York and Atlanta
According to Cirium data, Delta services between JFK and BOG will offer just under 6000 one-way monthly seats in September 2024, across 30 flights. The airline competes directly against Avianca which uses a mix of widebody and narrowbody planes. This includes the Airbus A320ceo and neo variants and the Boeing 787-8.
Avianca far exceeds Delta in terms of capacity. In September, Avianca’s operation features approximately 17500 one-way monthly seats. That is nearly triple what the SkyTeam airline is offering.
Delta also operates from Atlanta twice a day. According to Cirium, in November 2024 once its JFK route is suspended, the carrier has scheduled 60 one-way flights, contributing 11,940 seats.
Separately from Bogotá, the airline has also closed reservations for flights to Stuttgart in Germany from its Atlanta hub. This followed yet another change earlier in the year when the carrier moved it from a year-round flight to a seasonal service. It had also axed its ATL to Dusseldorf flight a year ago.
