During the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton initiated a private meeting with Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur at 9 a.m. on race day. The discussion, held over coffee in the paddock, focused on tire strategy and performance concerns. According to journalist Fred Ferret, the conversation was constructive, with Hamilton aiming to assist the team rather than express complaints.
Despite this proactive engagement, tensions surfaced during the race. Hamilton, running on medium tires, found himself behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who was on a different strategy. Frustrated by the team’s delay in issuing orders to switch positions, Hamilton sarcastically remarked over the radio, “Have a tea break while you’re at it.” Although the team eventually allowed the swap, Hamilton couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity and was instructed to return the position to Leclerc.
Post-race, Hamilton addressed the incident with Vasseur, urging him not to be overly sensitive and emphasizing that his comments stemmed from competitive drive rather than disrespect. He stated, “I could have said way worse things on the radio,” highlighting the intense pressure drivers face during races.
While Ferrari’s performance challenges persist, Hamilton remains committed to fostering a positive team environment and striving for improved results in upcoming races.
